the new reward to catch a suspect in a violent san jose crime spree. bombs shake gaza awake in one of the deadliest days yet. how world leaders are rushing to reach a truce. >> plenty of clouds in the skies. will we see rain? we'll talk about that coming up. >> things busy 101 through san jose. here's a live look. plus we have new accidents coming in from the chp. we'll tell you about it coming up. >> thank you, liz. good morning, everyone. it is monday, november 19. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time is 6:00. a manhunt is on for one of two suspects in a violent rampage through san jose. this morning, a reward is being offered to help find him. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in san jose where in a few hours police will hold a press conference. >> reporter: behind me the small memorial for a 22-year- old man shot and killed during an attempted carjacking on friday night. he was sitting inside the

vehicle in the 7-eleven parking lot on south kylie boulevard when he was approached by two men who were in the middle of a violent crime spree. here's one of those suspects. 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks. police caught him after a series of robberies. a police chase, a shooting that injured an officer, hit a carjacking that left a man dead. these a map that shows the path of that crime spree. they committed four robberies on friday starting at just after 7:30 when they robbed a little caesar's on story road at gunpoint, then police say they moved on to a gas station on east capital and a jack-in- the-box on curtner avenue and a spa on bird avenue. less than two hours later they arrived at the 7-eleven and shot and killed 22-year-old rory parkpettiford from san jose while attempting to carjack him. police spotted the vehicle on highway 101 and chased it through town. the suspects got out and opened fire on the officers. >> at about 9:00 i heard a not

continuous gunshots but maybe a little one after another with time. >> saw the victim's father up in the front and still in shock after finding out that his son had been shot in front of the 7- eleven. >> reporter: an officer suffered two gunshot wounds but is going to be okay. police returned fire and hit wilbanks. despite his injuries, he still got back into his car to elude officers. the second suspect is still on the loose. police caught wilbanks after he crashed on cunningham avenue hiding inside a house. at this point they are asking the public for help. they are offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and this marks the city's 42nd homicide of the year. in san jose, elissa harrington, cbs 5. the victim of the latest murder in menlo park was from newark. 42-year-old was shot to death on saturday night when he was sitting in a car with a woman

on 300 block of ivy drive. police are looking for two suspects. the shooting was menlo park's second homicide this year. authorities are going over a missing persons report as they tried to identify a body that was pulled from the waters in the san francisco bay. the u.s. coast guard found the man's body near fort baker about 8:00 yesterday morning. there is no information yet on the cause of the man's death. a vigil will mark the 24th anniversary of a girl's disappearance here in the east bay. michaela garecht was 9 years old when she was kidnapped from in front of a store on mission boulevard in hayward in 1988. a bone fragment found earlier this year is now being tested to see if it came from the missing girl. right now, a new attack on a gaza city high-rise. these are live pictures from gaza where you can see smoke coming from a building. witnesses say an israeli air strike has hit a building that houses a number of local and

foreign news organizations. you can still see smoke in the air there. israel has been attack the region from the air. retaliation for months of rocket attacks coming gaza. 94 palestinians including 50 civilians have been killed in gaza since the air strikes began last week. in israel, three civilians have been killed by rockets launched by the hamas. cbs reporter susan mcginnis has more on the attacks and efforts to encourage a cease-fire. reporter: bombs shook gaza city awake monday morning. the israeli air force targeted another 80 sites during overnight and morning bombing. the military says it targeted weapons storage facilities and police stations. hamas says israel is killing civilians. this sixth day of air strike follows an israeli offense on sunday leading to the deadliest day of attacks yesterday. at least 29 palestinians were killed including four children when a bomb hit this apartment building. israeli officials say hamas is

using civilian buildings as cover to launch rockets across the border. in tel aviv, people on the street ran for cover when sirens signaled an approaching rocket. israel's iron dome defense system has intercepted more than 240 rockets. during a trip to asia, president obama warned israel about expanding into a ground war but he defended israel's fighting back. >> there's no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders. >> reporter: u.n. secretary- general ban ki-moon is in cairo, egypt today to assist cease-fire talks there. the threat of a ground war remains. thousands of israeli tanks, soldiers and rocket launchers are ready to cross the border awaiting the command. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> the israeli air force

briefly took control of hamas' radio network warning people in gaza to stay away from hamas facilities. president obama is in cambodia now part of his asian tour that included this historic visit to myanmar. earlier today, he is the first u.s. president to visit that country also known as burma currently in the process of transitioning to democracy. he met with a nobel peace prize winner a democracy advocate. 6:06. let's check traffic and weather. it looks like a good week ahead. >> i think it should be a decent week. we have a lot of clouds out there now but it's kept the temperatures mild early on today. no rain yet. but that may change at least in part for the north bay. there's still a slight chance we could see some sprinkles or light showers in that direction but not by much. and then it looks like i think a better chance of rain as we head into tomorrow. but for today a lot of clouds will continue to stream across our skies. skies staying partly to mostly cloudy today. and then by tuesday afternoon, starting to see more rain

we are seeing slowing in the area coming through san jose. coming up we'll get a check. bay bridge. back to you guys. >> thank you. 6:08. this morning, chevron will provide an update on repairs following the fire at its richmond refinery this past august. chevron says it is now taking steps to upgrade its crude unit number 4 including cutting back on emissions. the fire in august sent thousands of richmond residents to emergency rooms with breathing problems. and an environmental justice group says independent testing shows cancer-causing chemicals still linger around some of the homes in the area there. global community monitor found traces of hydrocarbons over a nine-square-mile area more than three months after the accident. officials with the bay area quality management officials say there is no significant health risk though. oakland's airport and seaport could see picket lines tonight and tomorrow. members of the service employees international union

say they have gone 16 months without a new contract so they plan to go on strike. tomorrow the walkout will also include the port of oakland. workers say they plan to picket for 24 hours. new this morning, thousands of needy families in the south bay are getting help with their thanksgiving meals. sacred heart community service is handing out holiday food boxes today to those who recently signed up for the meals. 4,000 families are in line for the assistance. >> there's a lot of people coming into the agency. more and more every year. in fact, even as we are doing our signups this year, we had more signups than expected. so it's going to be a busy week. >> people who signed up this month have appointments today, tomorrow and wednesday to pick up their boxes. sacred heart continues to accept donations for their food program. black friday is still four days away. >> but, people already are pitching tents and they are lining up for a chance to grab some early deals. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is at best buy in pinole, where there is a campout going on

this morning. hi, cate. >> reporter: hi, frank. what do they say, the early bird gets the worm? in this case the early shopper gets the flat screen tv? i don't know how that works. but these people have basically set up camp early. they wasted absolutely no time. you can take a look. these shoppers actually pitched their tents as early as sunday morning to ensure a prime spot in line once those doors open for black friday. the big ticket items this year 40" flat screen tvs, game consoles, and laptops. now, some black friday savings can add up to hundreds of dollars one shopper here told me this morning, she's here because she wants to save $600. but for these diehards, they also say it's more than just the savings. >> i think it's great. the first choices the first day and, you know, the first what 42 get tickets [ indiscernible ] it's a good deal. and it's fun. >> reporter: some experts argue though that the experience of

the body of one worker was found saturday. four workers remain hospitalized. 6:16. let's check traffic. kind of a holiday week so i imagine not too crazy. >> we haven't seen too many big incidents on the roads. love that picture behind you. the holidays are in full force. we have the light on the embarcadero and metering lights at the bay bridge. there are some folks heading to work this morning. you can see the delays begin. let's see right around the 880 overcrossing so about 15 minutes right now to get you on the span. fortunately no incident. they turned on the metering lights early at 6:00. we started to see delays in the cash and fastrak lanes then. on the maps we are watching a couple of different problems. first the approaches to the bay bridge still look good. but if you are heading through the caldecott tunnel eastbound 24, this is going against the commute, we do have a stall in the tunnel so it is partially blocking that one eastbound bore that's open right now. so expect some delays heading out of oakland towards orinda. westbound still looks good. also in the south bay northbound 101 approaching capitol expressway. we have an accident there.

it is still there blocking one lane. possibly a second accident near tully is off to the right-hand shoulder. but this is what it's doing to the drive time. a little stop and go from 280 towards 237. 280 through downtown looks great and the guadalupe parkway no delays. a quick note of course it's monday night football tonight at candlestick. 49ers and bears, 5:30 is game time. so expect some delays along 101, 280 maybe a better option if you are cruising along that area later on this evening. that's a check of your "timesaver traffic." for more on your monday night football forecast and the rest of the week ahead, here's lawrence. >> that's a big game tonight! i mean, two titans right now, the bears and the 49ers right here on cbs 5. a few clouds outside now, folks. looks like it should be a nice day out there as we are going to stay mostly dry. a chance we could see rain north of the golden gate bridge. plenty of clouds, mild temperatures and showers could return as early as tomorrow. and i'll show you why. we have that cold front that's

with a squirt gun. a witness recorded this video of the officer and the clown in a brawl. the clown is a fixture outside the city's government building and considered a community activist. >> the officer reached for him and then all of a sudden the next thing you know they are on the ground punching each other. >> police wouldn't go on camera but they said the clown resisted arrest. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. 6:31 now. san jose police plan to update us later today on a violent crime spree that left one man dead. >> cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in san jose where police are offering a reward to catch a suspect. >> reporter: good morning. one of those suspects is believed to be armed, still on the loose. this has people in san jose shaken up because the victim a 22-year-old man who was shot and killed on friday was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. he was in his car in the 7- eleven parking lot when those two men in the middle of the violent rampage decided they needed a different car, made him their target and then killed 22-year-old rory parkpettiford, who is from san jose, while trying to carjack him. police did make one arrest. here's a picture of 26-year-old jonathan wilbanks. he was taken into custody after he crashed his car during a police chase. the second suspect took off on foot and is still out there

believed to be armed. here's a map that shows you the path of their crime spree. it lasted about two hours with the men going around town holding you businesses at gunpoint. caesar's on story road, gas station on east capital, jack- in-the-box on curtner and spa or bird avenue. they came to the 7-eleven to try and steal a car and killed the 22-year-old. police then ended up in a wild chase and shootout with the suspects after spotting their car on the freeway. >> chased them and eventually the pursuit ended up in east san jose in the area of lanai. the suspect stepped out of the car opened fire on the officers and the patrol car was struck several times and the officer was injured. >> reporter: the officer was treated and released. one of the suspects wilbanks was hit but that didn't stop him from trying to get away from officers. he got back into his car started driving away but then crashed on cunningham avenue.

and then he tried to hide in a house. police surrounded the home and made the arrest. now, police are offering a big reward. $10,000 for information that could lead to an arrest. this morning, police are expected to give us an update on the situation and also more information about their second suspect. in san jose, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> thank you. a judge could decide today whether one goh is mentally competent to be tried for seven murders. goh was arrested in april for the shooting spree at oikos university in oakland. psychiatrist who examined him are due to report to the court this afternoon. and a vigil is planned in hayward to remember michaela garecht, 9-year-old old when she was kidnapped in front of a store on mission boulevard 24 years ago this morning. a bone fragment found earlier this year has been tested to see if it came from the missing girl. those test results have been delayed. new this morning, the leader of the palestinian militant group hamas says israel can stop rocket attacks

from gaza by agreeing to hamas demands. today the violence has not stopped. these are live pictures from gaza city. you can see all the smoky haze there. witnesses say an israeli air strike has hit a high-rise building housing the media. paramedics say one person was killed, several wounded. the hamas tv station is located in that building. some incredible video of gaza. 94 palestinians including 50 civilians have been killed since the onslaught began just last week. in israel, 3 civilians have been killed by rockets launched by hamas. israel has retaliated for rocket attacks from gaza. there are talks under way right now in cairo, egypt in an attempt to reach a cease-fire agreement. the media covering stories like conflicts in the middle east can be caught off guard. watch what happens to correspondent anderson cooper during a live report.

trafficking. but the measure is hitting a welcome back. 6:44. on election day california voters approved prop 35 aimed at cracking down on sex trafficking. but the measure is hitting a snag over first amendment questions. melissa griffin is here from the "san francisco examiner" to break down the controversy. good to see you. >> reporter: good morning.

thanks for having me back. 81% of californians endorsed proposition 35 to crackdown on sex trafficking. on november 6, voters endorsed it. on november 7 a judge stopped some of its provisions from taking effect. now, specifically, there are provisions of that law that require registered sex offenders to disclose all of their email accounts all of their user name profiles and all of their internet service provider information to local authorities. the aclu stepped in and said that's a violation of free speech. a judge agreed to temporarily halt the provisions of a law that require those things until a full hearing in the middle of december. about 73,000 sex owe fenn, are registered in the state of california. so if this does take effect, that is a lot of information about people's internet activity for law enforcement to deal with. >> we were talk off camera. if you wanted to comment about something you wrote in the examiner or something in the "chronicle" you set up a user name and you go on. it's an alias more than

anything else, right? so you can throw up your opinions. how do they know who's who and enforce it. >> reporter: it's impossible to enforce. it looks a provision of the law meant to piggyback on larger charges or supplement charges where maybe you can't make out the crime itself so you charge them with failure to turn over your user name sort of like how al capone was arrested for tax evasion not for being a gangster. they made out the case for the fact he failed to turn over the user name and serious penalty years in prison. that's an interesting use of tax dollars. >> what do the backers say? >> we prior sex offenders to turn over personal and private information all the time and now that trafficking has largely moved to the internet, there's nothing wrong with requiring registered sex offenders to provide internet

information, as well. >> awkward. >> yeah. >> reporter: definitely. it's getting strange. so cruz kelly the main proponent of prop 35 ran against kamala harris to be the state attorney general so now we're in a position where state attorney general harris has to defend chris kelly's law her former opponent in election. and chris kelly has filed with the court to enter the case because he argues among other things that the state attorney general is not going to pursue the defense of the law vigorously so he inserted himself in the case because he says he doesn't know if kamala harris will do a good job so infighting between the two seems to be king. kamala harris on friday said she is going to be cracking down on human trafficking as part of her administration's priorities. >> you will find more of melissa's segments on cbssf.com/mornings. a silicon valley giant is searching for a new boss. >> here to talk about that is

jason brooks with kcbs and cbsmoneywatch.com. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. intel announcing this morning that ceo paul ottolini will step down and retire next may giving the company six months to look for a replacement either from within the firm or outside. ottolini has been there for four decades, ceo for eight years and only the fifth ceo over a the key to the change coming up is finding someone that can lead intel into mobile guys. cisco in the news announcing that it's buying san francisco- based startup morakki for $1.2 billion. they specialize in network cloud solutions. stock market overall off it a strong start today. there are increasing signs of optimism that there will be a deal in avoiding the "fiscal cliff." that's got investors excited this morning. let's look at the numbers. dow surging higher by about 140

>> "cbs this morning" starts at 7:00. thank you. here's something you rarely ever see down under. mother nature turned up the normally tranquil waters off australia with a rare waterspout. this happened earlier yesterday off new south wales. the storm brought rain, hail and lightning. no damage though or injuries were reported. and it's quite the sight. >> a lot better over the water than over land. isn't that right, mr. karnow? >> absolutely. unless you're on a boat and that's no fun but boy a beautiful wall cloud on the base of that. >> is that what that was? [ laughter ] >> around the bay area we have low clouds extending around the bay area. some clouds continuing to stream across the skies as it looks like the weather is going to stay a little bit unsettled, a little further north you go. still there's a chance we could see a couple of sprinkles maybe light showers to the north the rest of us just plenty of clouds and mild temperatures. a good chance showers returning as early as tomorrow. so here we go. we have high pressure but a weak ridge that's sending the south of this storm system most

of the energy held up to the north right now. so we are going to see clouds in the skies. still, that rain line staying north today. but tomorrow, that's going to start to shift a little further to the south and by tomorrow in the afternoon, we could start to see some rain showing up in parts of the north bay. clouds on the futurecast model continuing throughout today and slight chance of showers and then tomorrow, rain becoming more likely in the afternoon. and then slowly spreading to the south throughout tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. so as we get into wednesday, the busiest travel day of the year looks like it should be mostly dry. if you plan to head out today around the state 60s into the central valley, further north you go the better the chance of rain. mostly cloudy in the high country and lake tahoe about 47 degrees. around the bay today we are looking at 60s. even some places getting near 70 by the afternoon. livermore about 65 degrees in the napa valley. and 64 degrees in san francisco. next couple of days, return to a chance of some rainfall late in the day on tuesday and into tuesday night drying out for the better part of wednesday.
